Stepping the main elevation to suit the plot and create interesting balconies
PROJECT BRIEF
The client has a large family with people in different parts of the world who come together several times a year for celebrating birthdays and special occasions. The clients wanted to build a home near Auroville as a second home for themselves and their family plus hosting a large number of guests on a regular basis.
Deck for planters all around the home
CHALLENGE
The plot was surrounded by lush greenery on all sides. It had a road on 3 sides. However, the shape of the plot was a challenge in this project. It was a triangular shaped plot with acute angles at two corners. And it needed to accommodate five massive sized bedrooms.
Raising main living spaces to the first floor to invite the breeze
DESIGN
After several iterations, we came up with the idea of stepping the main elevation and having a deck all around the home with every view getting a slice of the sky. The clients loved it !
Entire home becomes a ‘Hawa Mahal’ !
We developed it further and stacked all services on one side and arranged all semi private spaces as an open plan. Since the bedrooms would be used by visiting guests during certain times of the year, the internal partition walls between bedrooms were converted into movable walls so the clients could enjoy larger bedrooms during the rest of the year.
The terrace was converted into an active edible farm with a private swimming pool. Due to the large windows on all sides positioned in the wind direction, the entire house becomes a “Hawa Mahal” !
